Over the past fifty years, the Minnesota Artists Exhibition Program (MAEP) has showcased and supported more than 3,000 artists from across the state working in an array of media and styles. As we look ahead to the next fifty years, the MAEP Advisory Committee will play a crucial role in shaping the program's future. Advisors are artists who live and work in Minnesota. As artists, they play a crucial role in fostering connections between their communities and the museum.
 

They will work closely with the MAEP Supervisor and Mia’s teams to promote and support regional artists, ensuring the program is inclusive, equitable, and accessible. The Advisory Committee reviews applications to the Open Calls. They select and rank three applications for final review by Mia’s internal committee. One application will receive $13,500 to realize their proposed exhibition in Mia’s U.S. Bank Gallery. Learn more about the role of the Advisory Committee below.
 

Ideal Candidates

  • We are actively seeking five Advisors for the Advisory Committee. Artists on the Advisory Committee could be emerging, mid-career, or established artists. Artists should be familiar with contemporary art, the MAEP, or Minnesota arts.
  • One position will be held for an artist from Greater Minnesota.
  • We ask that all Advisors live and work in Minnesota and have access to a computer or device with internet access.
  • Previous MAEP Artists, arts faculty, or those with experience jurying art calls are encouraged to apply.
  • Our strength lies in the diversity among the broad range of people who contribute their time and talents to Mia. Artists from a diverse range of communities are strongly encouraged to apply.


 

MAEP Advisory Committee Selection Process

  • Minnesota artists are encouraged to apply by visiting: https://new.artsmia.org/about/get-involved
  • The MAEP Supervisor will review all applications and recommend fifteen candidates.
  • Candidates will be reviewed by a committee composed of Mia’s MAEP Supervisor, Chair of Global Contemporary Art, and Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer.
  • Based on their applications, prospective advisors will be invited to interview.
  • Following the interview cycle, a final selection of five candidates will receive contracts for one year, renewable up to three years.


Role of the MAEP Advisory Committee Member

  • Paid positions that serve one-year terms; renewable for up to three years.
  • Attend an annual Training Workshop at Mia.
  • Review and score all MAEP applications via Submittable.
  • Meet to select and rank three applicants for final review.
  • Provide continued insights and feedback during the selection process.

 

Compensation to Advisory Committee Members

  • Each Advisor will be paid $500 for the annual Training Workshop and $1,000 per review cycle (three per year).
  • Advisors traveling from Greater Minnesota will receive mileage reimbursement for attending yearly in-person training and other onsite meetings.
  • Each Advisor will receive a Mia Contributor Membership ($60 value).
  • Each Advisor will receive invitations to select events and tickets to exhibitions.

Assistant Preparator

Full time (37.5 hours weekly), non-exempt, union 

Hourly rate: $30.30 – 30.96, depending on qualifications

The Job

Responsible for gallery preparation and maintenance, handling and installing works of art and other movements of works of art within the museum and outside the museum.

 

In this role, you will….

· Prepare works of art and displays for exhibition and installation. Be responsible for conveyance of works of art throughout the building in a proper and professional manner using best museum practices.

· Be responsible for exhibition production and gallery object(s) rotations. Implementing designs for exhibitions by constructing exhibition furniture and/or locating and moving existing structures into place.

· Prepare, maintain, and refurbish gallery spaces, including patching and painting of gallery walls and mounting of labels. 

· Be familiar with methods and techniques used to create works of art from prehistoric works to contemporary works. Have an awareness and understanding of the works of art which comprise the museum's permanent collection.

· Install works of art within the museum and occasionally at off-site locations. 

· Deliver and collect works of art by truck, both locally and interstate. Must be able to load large lots safely.

· Work with the Assistant Registrar for Storage and curatorial staff to organize and maintain storage areas. Including construction of storage furniture and devices. 

· Assists the Head Preparator with maintenance of the shop, shop tools, and supplies. Includes collection of supplies from distributors.

· Prepares and mounts labels for permanent and temporary galleries.

· BA in studio art or equivalent combination of education and experience

· Minimal one year of related work experience in museum or gallery; knowledge of works of art and how to move them; carpentry and painting skills

· Good manual dexterity; ability to stand for long periods of time; ability to lift 75 lbs. (will be required to lift heavier weights with assistance of lifting equipment and/or staff); ability to safely navigate tight spaces

 

Equipment Operated: 

· Hand and power tools, shop machines, winch, gantry, power hi-jack, scaffold, pallet truck, van and rental trucks (to 24 feet).

Leadership Annual Giving Officer

The Job

To play an integral role in strengthening and expanding the community of generous annual donors who support Mia’s mission. The Leadership Annual Giving Officer will achieve unrestricted contributed revenue goals in support of museum operations and act as a key ambassador through personal contact with donors and prospects. 

 

In this role, you will…

1. Lead frontline fundraising initiatives for Mia’s Annual Giving Program. 

· Following best practices in donor development and moves management, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of 250-300 donors and prospects. 

· Conduct background research, visit requests, in-person or virtual meetings and other meaningful interactions, create contact reports, and engage in stewardship activities. 

· Make ~130 substantive contacts annually, with a goal of securing leadership annual gifts (defined as gifts between $1,500 and $10,000 annually).Total gift production expectations for this role will begin at $300,000-$375,000 annually.

· Assist in maintaining prospect tracking information in donor databases, employing discretion while recording information of relevance to donors and prospect.

 

2. Work with Senior Manager of Annual Giving and Advancement Resources to refine and improve the Leadership Annual Giving (LAG) program. 

· Provide insight on strategy, tactics, resourcing, reporting needs, etc., in order to continually update the LAG program.

· Assist Senior Manager of Annual Giving and Advancement Resources in day-to-day activities such as training, presenting at Advancement Division meetings, attending donor meetings, and building/maintaining internal relationships with Mia staff.

· Work with Advancement and Curatorial staff to identify potential LAG level projects and prospects. 

· Stay up-to-date on industry best practices and incorporate them into workflow where possible to meet Mia’s Advancement needs.

 

3. Participate regularly in the strategic and operational business of the Advancement Division. 

· Assist with annual planning and goal-setting, training and professional development, and DEI initiatives.

· Occasionally assist with planning and staffing donor and member events.

 

4. Assist with financial planning and reporting.

· Create quarterly and annual revenue projections from the individual giving pipeline. 

· Ensure all solicitation activity is accurately tracked in Salesforce. 

 

5. Actively participate in broader museum initiatives through committees or specially formed teams.

Chair of Exhibition Strategy 

Curatorial Affairs Department

The Job

Work with the museum’s Director, Deputy Director, and curators to develop exhibitions that broaden Mia’s audience and enhance Mia’s brand and reputation. Establish strategic partnerships with sister organizations to co-develop important exhibitions. In order to fully capitalize on Mia’s special exhibition program, work to solidify the museum’s special exhibition calendar at least five to seven years out.

 

In this role, you will…

1. Develop art historically significant exhibitions that broaden Mia’s audience while enhancing its reputation and brand.

· Vet and optimize exhibition proposals.

· Ensure that the goals and strategy for special exhibitions are articulated in the Exhibition Brief. 

· Oversee development of adult programs as they relate to exhibitions.

· Oversee the process to create a title and blurb for each special exhibition. 

· Oversee the exhibition team (Smart Team) for each special exhibition, working in close collaboration across divisions by managing implementation schedules as well as outlining important milestones and tracking their completion

· Work with the Head of Exhibition to ensure the project stays within budget and adheres to the negotiated contract.

· Work with the Manager of Curatorial Project Management towards project management best practices, such as detailed project schedules and communication platforms (Asana).

 

2. Procure exhibition partnerships among sister museums worldwide. 

· Alert the Director, Deputy Director of potentially advantageous partnerships evolving at sister organizations at the ground level. 

· Connect Mia’s curators to relevant personnel at sister organizations with an eye to developing partnerships

 

3. Supervisory duties

· Supervise Head of Exhibition

· Supervise Head of Interactive Media

· Supervise Exhibition Designer 

 

4. Place Mia exhibitions at other art museum venues

· Working with Mia’s curators, develop “sell sheets” and “fact sheets” for Mia generated exhibition as marketing tools to secure additional venues

· Scout for potential venues for Mia generated exhibitions
